Industrial Extractor Fans

Industrial Extractor Fans

Industrial extractor fans come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and strengths so it can be difficult to choose the best one for your restaurant kitchen. There are roughly seven different sizes that are available from 315mm to 630mm which can be mounted in a few different ways. Many businesses prefer the axial style of fan as it can be used for a wide range of applications. This article will discuss these machines and hopefully make your choice of fan a bit easier.

One of the common drawbacks of industrial extractor fans is how loud they are. This can be such a problem that most restaurant managers choose to run them only when the amount of steam, smoke, and pollutants in the air reaches an intolerable level. However, there are some high end models that can run in a Quiet Mode that doesn’t make that much noise at all and even can be run all the time if you choose. You may even want to run the fan a bit after your staff has finished for the day in order to clear up any residual pollutants that may remain in the air.

If you are currently looking at the different options of industrial extractor fans you have available, you will have to decide whether you would like a model that uses ducts or one that uses filters. The former choice is the most efficient as it can take the polluted air directly out of your building and replace it with clean air. Your other option, the filtered models, do not do as well because they will recycle the same air within your building only they run it through a charcoal filter first to make it cleaner. While a ducted model is preferred in most situations, they can be a bit more on the expensive side. Not to mention, you may not have the space necessary to fit the ducts.

It is important that you find industrial extractor fans that have been built to last. Therefore, try to find a model that is built from steel as this is a durable metal that is sure to last. Also be on the lookout for one that is coated in corrosion proof paint and has steel wire guards as well for optimum protection. It is also a good idea to pay special attention to the kind of motor each model features. Try to find one that is lightweight, but works well and is built to last.

One final thing you will have to take into consideration is how you will install your fan. You will find that most axial industrial extractor fans may be installed in various ways such as:

– Mounted on the wall with special brackets

– Placed freestanding in the center of the room

– Hung from the ceiling with chains

– Inline with your ductwork

Industrial Ventilators for Ventilation

Industrial Ventilators for Ventilation

Industrial ventilation is of paramount importance to ensure the safety and well-being of employees. In industries where employees are subjected to dangerous chemicals, vapours and gasses on a daily basis, effective industrial ventilation can mean the difference between life and death. The basic concepts behind industrial ventilation are quite simple, but for it to be effective, the ventilation system needs to be installed by an experienced engineer.

Industrial Ventilation Methods

Industrial ventilation is a method of controlling employee exposure toxic chemicals, volatile airborne substances and flammable vapours by removing the contaminated air and replacing it with clean, fresh air. Used in a variety of different industries where poisonous vapours may be a problem, industrial ventilation is most often employed to remove welding and solvent vapours, oil mists and poisonous or volatile dust.

But, industrial ventilation may not always be necessary. True, it should be preferable for the continued health of your employees, but regulations suggest that industrial ventilation only becomes compulsory when:

•the levels of contaminants exceed regulated levels;
•the lower explosive limit of flammable vapours is exceeded; or
•when the oxygen concentration in an area drops below 19.5%.

Industrial ventilation should also be considered before respirators. Not only is the system easier to maintain, but, in the long run, is a much more cost effective method of air purity control.

Industrial Ventilator Options

There are a number of industrial ventilation options available depending on the circumstances of your industry’s circumstances. The most basic is indoor quality ventilation that aims to provide fresh air throughout a building as part of the existing ventilation system. This option is primarily used in offices but can be effective in small industries where the concentration of contaminants is low.

Easy to maintain and inexpensive to set up is dilution ventilation. This form of industrial ventilation uses large and powerful exhaust fans to extract contaminated air and to draw in clean air. It is very effective in clearing flammable vapours but is less effective for metal fumes or large concentrations of highly toxic materials. Depending on where the industry is located, the incoming air may require a lot of cooling or heating before it can be introduced into the industrial ventilation system, increasing the cost of using the system.

Dilution Ventilation Principles

Dilution ventilation uses the simple principles of displacement and dilution to function. Some of the contaminated air is removed and replaced with large amounts of fresh air. The concentration of the contamination is effectively lowered, making it safer for people to work in the area.

A more localised industrial ventilation system is local exhaust ventilation. This system captures the contaminations at the source and expels it before it has a chance to disperse into the air. For highly toxic contaminants or high concentrations, this industrial ventilation is probably one of the best. It does not require large amounts of fresh incoming air since the exhaust of contaminants is localised. This effective ventilation comes at a higher cost and more frequent maintenance, however.

Local Exhaust Ventilation

Local exhaust ventilation works like a vacuum cleaner forcing contaminated air to move from a high concentration to a low concentration. It is perhaps one of the most effective industrial ventilation systems because it removes the contaminants at the source before it has a chance to spread.

There are effective industrial ventilation systems available for any industry. Some are simple to use, like dilution ventilation, while others are specifically made for highly toxic environments, like local exhaust ventilation. Whatever the decision, as long as the industrial ventilation keeps your employees safe from the contaminations of the substances they work with, it is doing its job.

Axial Fans & Blowers – High Temperature

Axial Fans & Blowers – High Temperature

Canada Fans Co. now offers high temperature construction on its axial fans. There are a few steps of fan heat construction available: 200 F, 725 F, 800 F. High temperature inline fans are ideal for industrial oven and dryer exhaust systems where pressure requirements are minimal and compact light-weight designs are advantageous.

High Temperature Fans

200 F High Temperature Duct Fans come with special heat bearings and a belt drive with increased safety factor.

Tubeaxial Fans

650 F Tubeaxial Fan design involves special belt tunnel cooling system that induces a flow of cooler, ambient air through the belt well and inner tube, cooling the fan’s internal components. Depending on temperature requirements, modifications include high-temperature alloy fan wheel, special drive components, and modifications to provide internal ambient air cooling.

Fans with ambient air cooling systems handling hot airstreams must have sufficient airflow and be kept in operation until airstream temperatures cool below 120 F to prevent damage to the fan unit. The Tubeaxial fan ambient air cooling system is only effective while fan is operating.

Vaneaxial Fans

800 F Vaneaxial Fans are designed to operate continuously at temperatures to 800 deg. F, and include an auxiliary cooling fan that forces air through the bearing compartment and exits out through the insulated belt opening taking away excessive heat from the shaft and bearings. A high temperature shaft seal is also standard on this design.

Fans handling hot airstreams must have sufficient airflow and be kept in operation until airstream temperatures cool below 120 F to prevent damage to the fan unit. The Tubeaxial fan ambient air cooling system is only effective while fan is operating.

High Temperature Fans Specifications

The Canada Fans complete high temperature fans line now include:

– Operating up to 2200 F, centrifugal, axial and plug fan types;
– Pre-engineered and custom made fans for all types of applications with vaiety of impeller types and accessories;
– Canada Fans engineers provide a professional advice and recommend a right fan for every application & oven / plenum design;
– The fan offering provides competitive replacement fans to Garden City, Lau, IGE, Alloy Fabricating fan models; repairs, re-build & balancing;
– Unique high temperature water-cooled motors for operation up to 2300 F;

in the two major types of high temperature fans – centrifugal and axial:

Centrifugal Wheels:

* Multiblade forward curve wheel. This type of wheel is usually specified where there is a necessity for large volumes of flow against low to medium static pressure requirements. The forward curve blade is that it delivers the same volume of air as either the backward or radial blade wheel, at a lower fan speed, which is important due to wheel stresses at elevated temperatures. This fan is the most common type used in all types of heat treatment operations except where a buildup of material on the blades could occur, as wheel unbalance would result.
* Radial Blade, paddle wheel type fans. This type of wheel is usually specified where there is a necessity for medium volumes of flow against medium to large static pressures. The paddle wheel is considered a self cleaning type of wheel. It could be used where there are various materials or dust in the air stream. Due to its structurally strong design, it is used in many heat treatment applications at very high temperatures where maximum fan longevity is desired.

Axial Blade Wheels:

* The axial blade wheel is usually specified where there is a need for very large volumes of flows against low static pressure. Axial wheel like the multi-blade forward curve type wheel could cause an axial fan to deliver different air volumes at the same static pressure, if the total pressure requirement of the fan system was underestimated. This type of fan is ideally suited where a large volume of flow is required with a minimum of duct work and is used extensively for small and large furnaces, such as aluminum annealing.

Fiberglass Reinforced Plastics (FRP) provide the desired non-corrosive quality to the fan blades, resulting the operation of fans even in the very aggressive environment. Lightweight FRP fans also ensure a low moment of inertia, minimum wear & stress on motor, bearing and drive system.

Hollow FRP blades reduce material & installation costs and possibility of damage to the fan & drive during sudden stops. Composite structural design can be tailor made by using glass fibres in various forms (woven mat & rovings) in right direction while moulding the impeller with resin thus imparting the desired mechanical strength by improving its structural stability and enhanced mechanical properties.

Aerofoil design of fan impellers ensures higher efficiency, lower noise levels & less power consumption. The aerodynamically designed impellers of fans, fabricated by composite material can be an excellent alternative to ensure enhanced efficiency & appropriate energy savings apart from a wide gamut of critical advantages.

The FRP fans offer certain critical advantages as mentioned hereunder:

– Optimal aerodynamic design of fan impellers to provide higher efficiency for any specific application.

– Reduction in overall weight of the fan, thereby extending the life of mechanical drive systems.

– Require lower drive motor rating and light duty bearing system.

Ventilator Fans – Methods of Building Ventilation

Ventilator Fans – Methods of Building Ventilation

When straightforward breeze conditioning system is possible, the rate of air velocity method outlined above should be the basic method used. However, there may be rooms or areas within the building that will require special treatment. If so, one of the other methods, such as spot cooling or zone cooling, may be combined with the basic method to achieve the over-all objectives.

Air circulators

Air circulators may be effectively used to boost air velocity through large buildings that have a flow pattern difficult to control. Air circulators are also used to redirect air into occupied areas near floor level. Air circulators are also effectively used in locations where adequate exhaust and supply air fans may be lacking. Air circulation alone may provide heat relief and cooling comfort to individuals in the area. Northern Fan’s Type CABL fan is ideally suited to this application. For many installations, fans like this may be positioned 8′ to 10′ above the floor and at approximately 50′ intervals to obtain a continuously circulating column of air across a room or building. To broaden the column of air, fans should be located abreast of each other 15′ to 20′ apart. Fan locations and positions are easily adjusted to the requirements of the area.

Although an accurate, intelligent calculation of the required air volume for a breeze conditioning system has been made, there are practical limitations in most buildings that may seriously affect the final results. By giving these limitations proper consideration in the planning stage, the system can usually be modified to compensate for them. Some of the more common limitations are listed here.

Air Flow Restrictions due to interior partitions

It is obvious that interior partitions restrict and interrupt the flow of air through a structure. The effect of these partitions on the system must be analyzed and solutions found. In buildings with very high ceilings. the cross-sectional area factor may become unrealistic in calculating the required air volume. In most instances, inexpensive baffles can be installed across the building width to reduce the effective cross-section to an area 10′ or 12′ above floor level. Machinery, raw materials and finished goods that obstruct air circulation. These obstacles, like interior partitions, must be considered and methods worked out to overcome the problems they create to the proper circulation of air through the structure. Frequently, the location of heat-producing machinery will seriously interfere with the preferred pattern of air circulation. This situation can destroy the effectiveness of the system. An alternative plan to overcome the problem is essential.

Another limitation of the very high ceiling or roof is the difficulty of maintaining the air velocity near floor level. The baffle method just described is usually the best way to reconcentrate the air flow along the floor level where it will be effective in providing personnel comfort. In large buildings, baffles may be required at l00-foot intervals to keep air flow near the floor level.

Operations within the area frequently require wall openings or loading doors that will drastically interfere with the desired airflow pattern. In some cases, individuals may open windows that should remain closed to maintain effective air circulation. A remedy for each of these problems is required. For maximum efficiency and economy, a good layout will avoid the restricted intake opening. The type of exhaust equipment normally utilized is most economical and efficient if static pressure in the system is 1/8″ or less. To obtain this condition, air velocity through intake openings should not exceed 1,000 feet per minute, a lower figure is usually desirable.

Commercial Extractor Fans

Commercial Extractor Fans

Today there are a wide range of commercial extractor fans available on the market to cover just about every application imaginable; from large commercial applications, such as restaurant kitchen extractor systems, to quiet airflow systems that are virtually silent in operation.

While a commercial kitchen extraction system, commonly made in stainless steel can cost several thousand pounds to buy and install, a large vent-axia through wall extractor fan may be fine for a small hot food business such as a shop making toasted bacon sandwiches.

The new quiet airflow extraction systems are proving popular as they have a high airflow, yet can barely be heard running. This helps keep environmental noise down, and this is often important in an office workplace.

Commercial Inline Fans

Commercial in-line fans are available that sit above the ceiling, often some distance from the room they are actually extracting the air from. They are connected to vents in the ceiling by ducting, which then connects to the inline fan, and then expels the air through more ducting to a grill in an outside wall.

This type of fan has to be used in certain “classes” of environment by law, whereby no electrically powered unit can be placed within a certain distance of damp areas, such as shower rooms as an example.

When buying a commercial extractor fan, you will have to take more into consideration than when purchasing a domestic extractor fan. The reason for this is that whilst a domestic fan may be cheap to buy and install, and can be replaced at a low cost if it breaks, the same cannot be said of a commercial extraction system.

Large Commercial Extractor Fan Installations

Most large commercial extractor fan installations will cost several thousand to buy, and will need professional installation. So given the investment you may make in one, you need to be buying with a reputable supplier, as you may be installing it in an environment where you may have to stop work if the extractor fan system breaks down, such as in a commercial kitchen.

If this happens, you need to know that someone can come out and fix your extractor fan very fast, as if you have to close your kitchen down, you will be losing money until it is fixed. So you need to do some research about the company you are buying your fan from, and ensure that they can provide a fast call out, and that they carry sufficient spare parts.
